Hero Siege Jotunn - Ice Skill Trees and Leveling Route

Jotunn uses both Spell and Melee weapons across two ice trees, Son of Ymir and Son of Aurgelmir. The level 1-45 leveling route and why Frozen Boulder leads it.

Jötunn is unusual on the roster because it uses both Spell and Melee weapons. Most classes commit to one damage category, which decides what gear is worth picking up. Jötunn does not, and that widens its useful drop pool.

The class name is written Jötunn with an umlaut in-game; most guides and search results write Jotunn. Both refer to the same class.

What are the Jotunn skill trees?

Two, and the split is ranged versus melee rather than two flavours of the same thing:

TreeWhat it does
Son of YmirA master of ice, casting devastating blizzards at enemies
Son of AurgelmirA warrior who calls on the gods for a true form, hacking with ice-imbued weapons

The wiki's Jötunn sprite reflects the class's ice identity; its two trees then split that identity into spell and melee routes. Hero Siege Wiki contributors

The Fandom wiki is candid that “little is known about the Jötunn” beyond this — its lore entry is thinner than most of the roster.

How do you level a Jotunn?

Mobalytics publishes a 1–45 route for Season 10, credited to JuxtAPoser. Its stated caveat is worth carrying: the build was originally written for Season 9 and is expected to still serve in Season 10, rather than being rebuilt for it.

The route’s opening decision:

  • Take Frozen Boulder first. The guide’s reasoning is specific — it is a cast skill, which is what makes it useful early.
  • Flash Freeze is the alternative if you prefer it, with different handling.

Frozen Boulder also appears on the Season 10 tier list, in E for leveling — which sits oddly against a leveling guide recommending it. The honest reading is that a tier list ranks the archetype’s ceiling while a leveling guide ranks what is convenient before your build comes online. They are answering different questions, and this page does not resolve the disagreement for you.

Is Jotunn worth playing in Season 10?

Its ice archetypes rank low on the current list — Orb of Frost sits at C endgame, Frost Sunder at S endgame but E for leveling. That last pair is the useful signal: Frost Sunder is a gear-dependent finish, not a starting point.

If you want to play ice, expect a slow start and a strong endgame rather than consistent performance throughout.

Two reviewed source snapshots cover the class at endgame: the Orb of Frost Jötunn build and the farming-versus-bossing variant. Use the Season 10 tier list to understand their historical placement and the leveling guide for the campaign before either setup comes online.

Next step

Start with Frozen Boulder to get moving, and read the tier list’s endgame column before committing skill points past the campaign — the ice archetypes reorder substantially between leveling and endgame.
