Hero Siege Runewords - Base Item Rules and Socket Crafting

Runewords fail for one of four reasons, and all four are about the base item rather than the runes. Get the base right and the rest is following a recipe.

What base item does a runeword need?

Four requirements, and three of them are absolute:

Requirement	Rule
Rarity	Must be Common — white or gray. Basic, non-magical items only
Sockets	Must have exactly the number the recipe calls for. A 3-socket recipe needs exactly three
Item type	Must match the recipe. “Revelation”, for example, requires a Staff, Cane, Spellblade or Book
Quality	Not required, but strongly recommended — see below

The rarity rule is the one that catches people. A better-looking magical item is not a better base; it is an invalid one.

Why does base item quality matter if it is not required?

Because the base’s own stats carry into the finished runeword. Bonus physical or lightning damage on the base is added to the result, so two identical runewords crafted on different bases are not identical items.

The guidance is to use high-quality bases (S-tier or better) where you can. A runeword crafted on a poor base works, but permanently underperforms one crafted on a good base — and you cannot upgrade it afterwards.

Does rune order matter?

Yes. Runes must be socketed in the correct order for the recipe. Putting the right runes into the right base in the wrong sequence does not produce the runeword.

How do you add sockets to an item?

There is a crafting recipe for it:

2× Hel Runes + 1 P Gem

The critical limitation: once per item. You cannot repeatedly add sockets to work toward a higher count, so decide before you spend the recipe whether that base is the one you want to commit it to.

This is the main answer to “I can’t find a white base with the right sockets” — you can add them, once, to a base that is otherwise correct.

Where do you find white bases while leveling?

This is a genuine pain point that players raise directly: an abundance of magic and rare drops, and a shortage of the plain white items runewords actually need.

The socket recipe above is the practical workaround — find a base of the right type and quality, then add sockets to it rather than waiting for one to drop pre-socketed with the exact count.
