Hero Siege Save Files - Where They Are and How to Back Them Up
Where Hero Siege stores save files on Windows, what each file holds, and why editing them risks a ban given the game has its own anti-cheat.
Knowing where your saves live is worth ten minutes before you need it — losing a character to a reinstall is avoidable.
Where are Hero Siege save files stored?
On Windows, press Win+R and enter:
%localappdata%\hero_siege
Inside you will find:
| File | What it holds |
|---|---|
herosiege0.pas, herosiege1.pas, … | One file per character save slot — slot 1 is herosiege0.pas, slot 2 is herosiege1.pas, and so on |
shop.ini | Global values shared across characters, such as crystals, bonus item counts and unlocked hats |
How do you back up a Hero Siege save?
Copy the whole hero_siege folder somewhere else before you reinstall, verify
files, or change machines. That is the entire procedure — the files are plain
text and self-contained.
Restoring is the same in reverse: put the files back with the game closed.
Two situations where this is worth doing:
- Before verifying game files, since verification can replace local data.
- Before a season rolls, if you want a record of a character as it was.
Should you edit your save file?
No — and this page will not tell you how.
The files are plain text, which is why editing them is discussed openly. The same community post that explains the format includes its own warning:
Whilst the game doesn’t seem to use VAC, the devs apparently do have their own anti cheat system. So I wouldn’t go playing online, co-op or anything with edited files.
That risk is not hypothetical. Panic Art Studios operates its own anti-cheat, has issued bans, and disabled Steam Family Share specifically because it was being used to evade them. Players who have been banned describe a support process that runs through Discord — and at least one describes being unable to reach it after also being banned there.
Editing a save to gain progress is cheating in a game with online ladders and trading. The realistic outcome is losing the account, not gaining a shortcut.
What about save editors downloaded from forums?
This page deliberately links to none. The tools that circulate for this come from forums where ownership, current compatibility and malware risk are not established, and running an unknown executable against your game folder to gain items you would be banned for using is a poor trade twice over.
Keep local-file recovery separate from account authentication. The Family Share policy can require PAS relinking, the Steam verification error can clear without touching saves, and a consumed Blood Pact token is a storefront or support problem rather than a save-file problem.
Next step
Copy the hero_siege folder somewhere safe now, while nothing is wrong — that
is the only part of save-file handling that reliably helps you.
